Sev has been sent to spy on the empire, but maintaining his cover may force him to fight on the wrong side of the war. And Veronyka’s sister, Val, is determined to regain the empire she lost—even if it means inciting the war herself. This book has heart (it’s in the title), and shows just how far somone will go for something if they really want it. Our Aries peeps will connect with Veronyka by understanding that if you’re going to do something, do it with all your heart.

2. An Enchantment of Ravens by Margaret Rogerson

They crave human Craft with a terrible thirst, and Isobel’s paintings are highly prized. But when she receives her first royal patron—Rook, the autumn prince—she makes a terrible mistake. She paints mortal sorrow in his eyes—a weakness that could cost him his life. Teams are nothing without loyalty, so in a way, our Aries’ peeps are our little teams. Once you’re in their circle, they will do anything for you and be there through all of the ups and downs. They are the ones who glue your circle together and probably the ones who started it in the first place.

Elements, yes! Not like the periodic table but like what your astrological sign falls under. Let’s break it down. There are four elements: fire, earth, air, and water. Your star sign falls into one of those based on traits and qualities you posses, so like, of course we have to compare it to the books you’re into, it only makes sense. So let’s see what the elements are telling us:

What is Your Element Telling You to Read?

Fire Signs:

If you are an Aries, Leo, or Sagittarius, then you my friend are FIRE! You tell it like it is, you do not break easily and you will literally do anything but put yourself down. In Crown of Feathers, Veronyka stops at nothing to be a warrior. Nina from Slayer doesn’t think she has what it takes but soon realizes her potential, and in When We Were Magic, there is so much girl power, you’ll be more empowered to do anything after reading it!

Invite an someone who is under the Earth element. Once they believe in something there is no changing their mind and once they are on your side, they will stay. Loyalty is their language.

1.  Chain of Gold by Cassandra Clare

Geminis LOVE to talk, it doesn’t matter whom with, like the wind, they go with the flow and let the convo go where it must. Libras are very indecisive, like the wind, their minds go everywhere, they see the good and the bad in everything and are literal professionals at pros and con lists. Water Signs:

Water is fluid and gentle. Well, Pieces, Cancers, and Scorpios definitely have traits of this majestic element! First off, all of our water signs can appreciate a good cry. They might not always like to admit it, but they love things that they can feel. Whatever they do, they do it with their hearts and they are probably some of the most loving people you will ever meet. Like the touch of rain drops on your bare skin, they are graceful at the core. All these books have one thing in common: they WILL (if not make you sob uncontrollably) touch your sensitive side.

2. Permanent Record by Mary H. K. Choi

While, yes there is romance in this book, I’d say the true story is about self love and self acceptance. When Leanna (a social media and international icon) and Pablo (a college dropout working the graveyard shift at a twenty-four-hour deli) meet at 5:00 a.m. at the bodega in the dead of winter it’s absurd to think they’d be A Thing. 7. When Dimple Met Rishi by Sandhya Menon

The Aquarius is under the element of air. Air elements are known to be intelligent and rather opinionated. They earn their pennies the fair way and will do anything to get to where they want to go. Dimple must be a star sign under the air element too, because whether her parents like it or not, she wants to follow her OWN path and to be the next female tech genius. Rishi, on the other hand is actually a pretty romantic guy and won’t let Dimple get away so easy. It sounds like a challenge (and an Aquarius also LOVES a challenge).

However, as a water sign, they are still very in tuned with their emotions and stay true to themselves as they take on what life throws their way. So here are the perfect books to read for all those Scorpios out there.

The Perfect Book Recs for Scorpios

1. SLAY by Brittney Morris

Kiera Johnson just doesn’t give up in this coming-of-age, girl power novel. Driven to save the only world in which she can be herself, Kiera must preserve her secret identity and harness what it means to be unapologetically Black in a world intimidated by Blackness. If you’re a scorpio, you will stop at nothing to protect what you truly believe in, even if the stakes are higher than you’ve ever imagined!

2. The Perfect Candidate by Peter Stone

Scorpios LOVE a good debate, whether they are right or wrong, nothing will stop them from taking on a challenge. They live for controversial topics and don’t mind a bit of conspiracy here and there. In the Perfect Candidate, Cameron Carter lands an internship with Congressman Billy Beck in Washington, DC, he thinks it is his ticket out of small town captivity. What he lacks in connections and Beltway polish he makes up in smarts, and he soon finds a friend and mentor in fellow staffer Ariel Lancaster. That is, until she winds up dead. Cameron realizes Washington isn’t at all what it seems. Conspiracy, deception, and mysteries are all in this book, a Scorpio win!

3. The Diabolic by S.J. Kincaid

The Diabolic by S.J. Kincaid

This book is the adventure Scorpios will be on the edge of their seats for.  All the action and courage in this story is driven by pure emotion and if that’s not a Scorpio, I have no idea what is! A Diabolic is ruthless. A Diabolic is powerful. A Diabolic has a single task: Kill in order to protect the person you’ve been created for. Nemesis is a Diabolic, a humanoid teenager created to protect a galactic senator’s daughter, Sidonia. The two have grown up side by side, but are in no way sisters. Nemesis is expected to give her life for Sidonia, and she would do so gladly. She would also take as many lives as necessary to keep Sidonia safe.

4. Dry by Neal Shusterman and Jarrod Shusterman

When the California drought escalates to catastrophic proportions, Alyssa is forced to make life and death decisions for her family in this harrowing story of survival. At the core of many decisions made by a Scorpio are deep emotions and in this novel it is no different. Alyssa’s family is the very thing that keeps her going when water becomes nothing less than a dream.

5. American Panda by Gloria Chao

At seventeen, Mei should be in high school, but skipping fourth grade was part of her parents’ master plan. Now a freshman at MIT, she is on track to fulfill the rest of this predetermined future: become a doctor, marry a pre-approved Taiwanese Ivy Leaguer, produce a litter of babies.
With everything her parents have sacrificed to make her cushy life a reality, Mei can’t bring herself to tell them the truth—that she (1) hates germs, (2) falls asleep in biology lectures, and (3) has a crush on her classmate Darren Takahashi, who is decidedly not Taiwanese. She’ll have to find a way to be herself, whoever that is, before her web of lies unravels. This book speaks to Scorpios because they know that being their own self is priceless and even if they have to fight for it, it’s always worth it.

6. When Dimple Met Rishi by Sandhya Menon

Dimple Shah I feel has many characteristics of a Scorpio, no matter what her mother expected of her, she knew she was going to do what made her proud. Even someone like Rishi Patel coming in and (almost) ruining things with his hopeless romantic dreams, Dimple refuses to give him the time of day that doesn’t involve a task for the summer web developing program. Though, like Scorpios, Dimple can’t help but get swept into feeling something.

2. Girls With Sharp Sticks by Suzanne Young

This book is filled with twists and turns as Mena collects all of her fellow classmates to fight back from what never was a great opportunity for girls. Innovations Academy is filled with horrifying secrets and Mena discovers something far more alarming than anything she’s ever imagined. As this series continues to grow, so should the talk about it coming to a TV channel. In addition to being a page turner, it also hits some very real topics about the struggles that come from how girls and women are mistreated and expected to act in society. This book could seriously be a modern inspiration for the next Handmaid’s Tale.

3. Bad Girls with Perfect Faces by Lynn Weingarten

Love triangles? Check. Dark, dark secrets? Check. Misunderstandings that cause HUGE problems? Check, check, Check! This book basically writes it’s own script with deceiving characters and plot twists at every page. All Sasha wanted to do was protect Xavier, her best friend (and secret crush since well, forever) from his somewhat psychotic girlfriend and maybe even teach her a lesson in the process. However, Sasha’s stunt turns into SO much more. Not to mention the fact that Sasha herself will never be the same again. Does this sound similar to Riverdale or is it just me?

4. Sky Without Stars by Jessica Brody and Joanne Rendell

This book was inspired by one of the most popular books (and musicals), Les Miserables, AND is set in space…so there’s a lot of potential here. When the Last Days came, the planet of Laterre promised hope. A new life for a wealthy French family and their descendants. But five hundred years later, it’s now a place where an extravagant elite class reigns supreme; where the clouds hide the stars and the poor starve in the streets; where a rebel group, long thought dead, is resurfacing. This could for sure emerge on the FX channel’s timeline.

5. The Last Magician by Lisa Maxwell

History, magic, and mysteries like no other, this book is about Esta, a talented thief who’s been raised to steal magical artifacts. All of Esta’s training has been for one final job: traveling back to 1902 to steal an ancient book containing the secrets of the Order—and the Brink, a dark energy that is a barrier confining anyone to the island of Manhattan—before the Magician can destroy it and doom the Mageus to a hopeless future. Like any good fantasy television show, this book has magic, mysteries, and fantastic hooks.

6. The Wicked Deep by Shea Ernshaw

Charmed, Sabrina the Teenage Witch, American Horror Story, and the Game of Thrones all had witches. Those were some of the most top watching shows on air. The Wicked Deep would be no exception as three sisters sentenced to death—from two centuries ago for witchery—return, stealing the bodies of three weak-hearted girls so that they may seek their revenge, luring boys into the harbor and pulling them under. Penny Talbot has accepted the fate of the town. But this year, on the eve of the sisters’ return, a boy named Bo Carter arrives; unaware of the danger he has just stumbled into. If this doesn’t sound like an Emmy-nominating worthy show, I don’t know what does.

7. Slayer Kiersten White

Ok, this book is from the Buffy Universe so it just makes sense to either bring Buffy back or have a show that’s just as good. I mean it worked for Star Trek and Degrassi, so it can definitely work again, right? We’ll let Hollywood decide.

8. Crown of Feathers Nicki Pau Preto

Again, LOTS of girl power and we’re always here for that! Once, the world was ruled by fierce warrior queens, a grand empire was built upon the backs of Phoenix Riders—legendary heroes who soared through the sky on wings of fire—until a war between two sisters ripped it all apart. Now, sixteen years later Veronyka is a war orphan who dreams of becoming a Phoenix Rider from the stories of before—even if that means disguising herself as a boy to join their ranks. The graphics would be AMAZING; imagine those fired wings coming to life!!!

9. Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe by Benjamin Alire Sáenz

Artistotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe by Benjamin Alire Saenz

Aristotle is an angry teen with a brother in prison. Dante is a know-it-all who has an unusual way of looking at the world. When the two meet at the swimming pool, they seem to have nothing in common. But as the loners start spending time together, they discover that they share a special friendship—the kind that changes lives and lasts a lifetime. This book could be a show that just goes on for generations. With so much heart—which we know all the best shows have—viewers will never want to stop tuning in.

10. Scythe series by Neal Shusterman

Scythe is just one of those books that’s before it’s time. It makes you question society and think about insane possibilities. I don’t care what anyone says, the best T.V. shows are built on wonder. All humans do is wonder and this book is nothing shy of a whirlwind of guesses, suspicions, and honestly hooks that will drive you crazy.

11. Alanna by Tamora Pierce

Alanna by Tamora Pierce

Another book that contains some serious kick-butt, girl power within it’s pages. Girl power NEVER goes out of style, people. With this quartet there are more than enough occurrences to obtain an action packed television series. Our main character, Alanna disguises herself as her twin brother to follow her dreams and join the road to knighthood. Ummm, that literally sounds like a classic!

12. Smart House – Virtually Yours by Sarvenaz Tash

Despite hitting the scene way back in 1999 (think: almost a decade before the first iPhone came out), Smart House took on the promise and perils of filling a personal void with a virtual reality head-on and spectacularly. Virtually Yours tackles a similar theme with NYU freshman Mariam Vakilian trying out a new virtual reality dating service. When the app chooses her matches, one of them is her IRL new BFF Jeremy, and the other is her ex-high-school-sweetheart Caleb—and neither of them know that the match they’re chatting with is her. Gasp!

13. Hatching Pete – Kings, Queens, and In-Betweens by Tanya Boteju

Hatching Pete taught us that sometimes, you have to dress like a big chicken to discover your true self. Twenty years later, we still remember the dread cast upon Johnny Kapahala when he discovered his surfing dreams could be no more as his dad makes him relocate to the most surf-less place on Earth—Vermont. Bailey Rydell moves from chilly-ish D.C. to the warm and light air of SoCal. Here, surfing is basically the new walking. If the thought of the heart and lessons of The Color of Friendship being told through the story of a black girl gamer honors student excites you as much as it does us, don’t miss SLAY. (And did we mention the game in question is a Black Panther-inspired card RPG?)

17. Minutemen – The Last Magician by Lisa Maxwell

Jump to the rhythm and step to the mu-sic, all in together, let’s shoooow how we do it!’ Ah the movie that had one of High School Musical’s all-stars, Corbin Bleu, and Keke Palmer; genius. It’s Libra season, peeps! As we dive right into the cool season of fall, we have to face the facts; it’s time to put away those beach bags and bathing suits and bring out the Halloween decorations and fall scarves. Just like the looming fall air, Libras are all about being gracious but tend to be indecisive. They love balance and harmony which is exhibited by their sign of the scale. So in honor of the time of the Libra, let’s weigh in what books our harmonizing friends of the air element would be most into.

The Perfect Book Recs for Libras

1. All American Boys by Jason Reynolds and Brendan Kiely

Told in alternating prospectives, this book is filled with emotion and heart as it follows two teens. Rashad, who has been falsely accused of shoplifting, the act quickly turns into something else when the cop, Paul Galluzzo, pounds his face to the ground. Then there’s Quinn, the boy who has been raised by Paul. He can’t come to terms that the man who took him in after his father’s death could be guilty of such a thing. As the town starts to take sides, the two boys are forced to face decisions and heavy consequences. The Libra will appreciate the fact that both sides of the story will be told in this story ripped straight from headlines.

2. Hungry Hearts edited by Elsie Chapman and Caroline Tung Richmond

Libras love harmony and we all know that food can bring harmony like nothing else. In this book there are thirteen tales from various authors that show their love for food and all of the comfort and happiness it can bring. Each tale is wrapped up in steamy deliciousness that is bounds to make your tummy rumble.

3. Sorcery of Thorns by Margaret Rogerson

Elisabeth knows best of all that all sorcerers are evil. One day she wants to be the very thing that protects the kingdom from their power. Yet, when an act of sabotage ends in one of the most dangerous grimoire being released from Austermeer’s Great Library where they stay, Elisabeth is swept up in the crime and is torn from her home to face the music. The only one who seems to be able to help her is her sworn enemy, Nathaniel Thorn. As their alliance grows, Elisabeth starts to question everything she ever knew and realizes she has more power than she ever imagined. With this book, our Libra friends will be able to relate to Elisabeth as they have a very high level of intellect along with intuition. They will be able to pick up on the insight this tale inspires.

4. Starry Eyes by Jenn Bennett

This book has ALL.THE. FEELS!! In Jenn Bennett’s second novel, we follow Zorie who ends up in the terrifying situation of being stranded in the woods with no one but the boy who broke her heart. Ahh, Libras are one of the most hopeless romantics in the zodiac. They may not admit it, but they love love and this book is full of those moments that make you want to swoon. Not to mention it has dramatic moments that also will make you cringe. A Libra’s dream!

5. Scythe by Neal Shusterman

In this first installment to the Arc of the Scythe trilogy, we enter a world where humanity has conquered all the bad, hunger, war, and even death. The Scythe’s are the only ones who can end life. Citra and Rowan are chosen to apprentice to a scythe—a role that neither wants. These teens must master the “art” of taking life, knowing that the consequence of failure could mean losing their own. If you’re a Libra, you understand that balance is indeed an essential in life just as Citra and Rowan learn by realizing a perfect world comes with a heavy price. Libras also appreciate good discussion and this book definitely makes you think deeply.

6. Five Feet Apart by Rachael Lippincott

Did I mention Libras were romantics? Well, I’ll say it again, they love a good love story. Five Feet Apart is the ultimate love story about what people will do to get a chance at love. For Stella and Will, that mean even risking their lives just to endure each other’s company. Both diagnosed with the horrible lung disease of Cystic Fibrosis (CF), the two love birds can’t be within six feet of each other without risking high chances of infection. However, they realize CF has already taken so much from them and their young lives, they can at least take back one foot and be five feet apart.

Warning: don’t read this without tissues, trust me!!

7. Just Wreck It All by N. Griffin

As the Libra’s symbol is represented by a scale, Libras need balance within their lives. If you are a Libra, you thrive when there is a rhythmic balance in your daily routines. In Just Wreck It All, Bett feels she must balance out the good with the bad in putting her life’s events in a series of pluses and minuses. She figures as long as the minuses are higher, she can maybe forgive herself for the horrible thing that happened. Though life has a different plan for her, and it doesn’t involve subtraction.

Not a Libra? Check out what books you should read based on your zodiac sign!

Have you ever heard the saying, ‘look to the stars?” Since they’re billions of years old, they kind of have an idea of what they’re doing. There is a lot you can tell about someone based on their star sign. Yes, your horoscope can even give hints as to what books you might like based on your interest. If you don’t know your sign, it will be whatever date correlates with your birthday. So, listen to the stars and see what book suits you according to your sign.

The Books Your Zodiac Sign is Telling You To Read!

Capricorn (12/22-1/19)

Starry Eyes by Jenn Bennett

The Unexpected Everything by Morgan Matson

In these books, the main characters, Zori from Starry Eyes and Andie from The Unexpected Everything, both like to make plans and stick to it. Just like our Capricorn friends. Sometimes they are so focused on the way they want things to go, they miss out on the fun of spontaneity. However, just like Andie and Zori, the Capricorn has to let loose a little and see how life’s craziness can help us discover something great.

Aquarius (1/20-2/18)

Period Power by Nadia Okamoto

Stay Sweet by Siobhan Vivian

Stay Sweet by Siobhan Vivian

The Aquarius, the water bearer!! If this is your sign, you love to take a stand and do what you believe is right and you won’t let anything get in your way. In Period Power, Nadya Okamoto is all about taking a stand and enforcing her readers to understand and help change the ways periods and period products are seen and discussed in this country. Stay Sweet is also about a girl, Amelia, who won’t let the traditions and values of a very important ice cream stand bite the dust as new management swifts in. These girls are all about standing up for their rights and themselves.

Pieces (2/19-3/20)

Starfish by Akemi Dawn Bowman

Starfish by Akemi Dawn Bowman

Summer Bird Blue by Akemi Dawn Bowman

The Pieces is all about their emotions, whichever way the water turns is the way their fish tale sways and determines how they’ll feel (they’re the sign of the fish FYI). In both Akemi Dawn Bowman’s books, a whirl of emotions lies between the pages. You’ll want to shout, cry, gasp in Starfish, and you’ll definitely want to cry (and cry some more) in Summer Bird Blue along with wanting the main characters to experience happy emotions and understand the different moods they are learning to feel. Also, the Pieces’ element is water and both these books have beautiful water themes, so, that’s a bonus!

Crown of Feathers by Nicki Pau Preto (Out February 2019)

Dry by Neal Shusterman and Jarrod Shusterman

If you are an Aries, you love a challenge, you love adrenaline and you do not let people walk all over you. You have courage to be and do what you want and you are a true leader among the rest of the zodiac signs. There are some serious challenges in these books, yet the main characters don’t let that stop them from trying to do what is right. When the tap runs out in Dry, Alissa becomes determined to save her family no matter what she has to do. In Crown of Feathers, Veronyka disguises herself as a boy so she can join a secret group of warriors. Both characters are put in serious situations and they step up to the challenge.

Taurus (4/20-5/20)

The Perfect Candiate by Peter Stone

The Taurus doesn’t like to back down or be wrong for that matter. As the sign of the bull, you will run head on into anything you are passionate about, even if there are a million reasons why you shouldn’t. There is only one way to do things, your way, and you stay true to what that’s going to be. In Clockwork Angel, the first book in the Infernal Devices seriesTessa Gray crosses the ocean only to be greeted by something terrifying. In The Perfect Candidate, Cameron discovers a conspiracy theory to be true and does the opposite of safe to uncover secrets of our capital city.

Gemini (5/21-6/21)

Gemini by Sonya Mukherjee

Emergency Contact by Mary H. K. Choi

Gemini is the symbol of the twins, so you have two dominant, great qualities and can understand that there are two sides to every story. You also rule at communication since talking is something most Gemini’s loooooove to do. Gemini has the best of both worlds because it’s really easy for them to see two very different things clearly and make sense of variety. So clearly these books will give Gemini great feels as Emergency Contact relates to what they like to do and Gemini can relate about who they are!

Cancer (6/22-7/22)

Save the Date by Morgan Matson

A Heart in a Body in the World by Deb Caletti

If you’re a Cancer, you can be very in tuned with your feelings and appreciate a good cry and sentimental endeavors. The cancer is also all about family, they are most happy when surrounded by their whole family and submerged in all of their presence. Save the Date is all about family as Charlie tries to make things go smoothly when her sister decides to get married at their home. Since it will be the last time all the siblings are under the same roof of their family home before her parents sell it, Charlie wants to make it as special as she can…even if things don’t go as planned. As for A Heart in a Body in the World, Annabelle’s family is one of the things that keeps her going as she runs cross country after a traumatic experience…this one will require tissues to collect tears…in which the Cancer will appreciate.

Leo (7/23-8/22)

Queen of Air and Darkness by Cassandra Clare

Tradition by Brendan Kiely

Leo, the lion[ness], your spark and smarts are quick and you’re tough with self confidence and pride like your friend the lion. However, your core is soft and friendly. These books are all about being quick and trusting your instincts. In Tradition, the main character must understand if he wants to be a part of this world that does not take responsibilities for their actions and learn how to overcome the wronged rituals. In Queen of Air and Darkness, the last book in the Dark Artifices series, dark secrets and forbidden love threaten the very survival of the Shadowhunters, but maybe it’s worth it.

Libra (9/23-10/22)

Five Feet Apart by Rachael Lippincott

Just Wreck it All by N. Griffin

As the Libra’s symbol is represented by a scale, Libras need balance within their lives. If you are a Libra, you thrive when there is a rhythmic balance in your daily routines. In Five Feet Apart, Stella and Will take back one more step for each other to make a balance of their situation. They figure it’s more than fair considering the disease they both share, cystic fibrosis, has already taken up so much of their life.

Scorpio (10/23-11/21)

This Lie Will Kill You by Chelsea Pitcher

The Diabolic by S.J. Kincaid

The Diabolic by S.J. Kincaid

Scorpios like to go big or go home. They don’t half attempt situations, it’s go for broke. In both This Lie Will Kill You and The Diabolic, the stories are anything but half-hearted. They stop at nothing to get justice even if what they will do involves risking their lives. These books follow the quote of “the only thing to fear is fear itself” and if that’s doesn’t describe a Scorpio, I don’t know what does.
