West Side Story: These Violent Delights by Chloe Gong

Shakespeare brought us the Montagues and the Capulets, West Side Story made it the Jets and the Sharks. Now, Chloe Gong introduces us to the Scarlet Gang and the White Flowers. Set in 1920’s Shanghai, a blood feud between two gangs leaves the city gripped in chaos and at the heart of it all is star-crossed lovers Juliette Cai and Roma Montagav.

Cinderella: Kings, Queens and In-Betweens by Tanya Boteju

Cinderella has a fairy godmother, why can’t we? Dierdre, also known as Dee Dee La Bouche, is a fabulous drag queen and glamorous makeup artist who sweeps our young protagonist, Nima, away to discover what love truly is. This is a modern fairytale about a queer teen who navigates questions of identity and self-acceptance while discovering the magical world of drag. A sprinkle of magic glitter goes a long way to push you closer to a self you never knew you could be.

Dear Evan Hansen: When We Were Infinite by Kelly Loy Gilbert

When the future is unsure and your family is splintered, it is instinct to hold on to friends – even when that too is falling apart. The question “how much of yourself are you willing to give up for others” is what ties these two stories together. Beth has loved Jason for as long as she can remember. But when she accidentally witnesses a secret act of violence against him, everything changes—and there’s no going back.

In the Heights: Barely Missing Everything by Matt Mendez

Juan and JD have plans to get out of their hometown, but Fabi is desperate to stop them. In In the Heights, Vanessa is just as desperate to get out and achieve her dreams, but Usnavi wants her to stay with him. The lyrics “I’m running to make it home, but home is where Vanessa’s running away from” capture what both stories are all about. Barely Missing Everything is a heartbreaking novel told through three points of view exploring how difficult it is to make it in life.

Cats: City of Bones by Cassandra Clare

Let’s look past the actors CGI-ed as cats and just appreciate the feline fun of singing. Cat people will find another friendly face in City of Bones. Church, the immortal cat, is a brilliant grouch that deserves his own song as a well-loved character of The Shadowhunter Chronicles.

Into the Woods: Legendborn by Tracy Deonn

Inspired by the Grimm Brothers’ fairy tales, Into the Woods twists multiple legends into one story of a family breaking a curse. If you enjoy the retellings of myths, then Legendborn should be your next read! While Into the Woods is a melting pot of tales, Legendborn is a new take on Arthurian legend (with a sizzling love triangle!).

Wicked: The Witch Haven by Sasha Peyton Smith

Ariane Grande and Cynthia Erivo were announced to play Glinda and Elphaba in the upcoming Wicked movie musical and I couldn’t be more excited. Enemies to best friends, the two witches break barriers at their school, Shiz University, until misunderstandings lead Elphaba to embrace the gossip naming her the wicked witch. If you can’t get enough of the witchy drama, then The Witch Haven is your next read. Frances must decide whether to play the hero or the villain as she chooses between justice for her murdered brother and her growing feelings for Finn, or the safety of her city and fellow witches.
