7 Captivating Must-Listens for Audiobook Month

1.  I Killed Zoe Spanos by Kit Frick

This audiobook is narrated by not one, not two, but a WHOLE CAST! For fans of Sadie and Serial, this gripping thriller follows two teens whose lives become inextricably linked when one confesses to murder and the other becomes determined to uncover the real truth no matter the cost.

2. Lady Midnight by Cassandra Clare, read by Morena Baccarin

It’s not exactly a surprise that a person as talented as Morena Baccarin would have a voice to match, and her entrancing narration of the first Dark Artifices novel is a prime example of why we love Cassandra Clare’s audiobooks so much. And if you like this one: the second in the trilogy, LORD OF SHADOWS, is read by Buffy the Vampire Slayer’s James Marsters. Keep an ear out for the third, QUEEN OF AIR AND DARKNESS, coming this December!

3. Autoboyography by Christina Lauren

Not only is Sebastian the TA for Tanner’s writing class, he’s also from a very religious community. So of course Tanner falls in love with him. Deacon Lee narrates from Tanner’s perspective in a way that’ll make you feel like your actual best friend is telling you a true story. And, just like you root for things to work out between your ride-or-die and their crush, you’ll be cheering for these kids from the moment they meet to the moment they… Well, you’ll just have to listen to find out.

4. For Every One by Jason Reynolds

I’m convinced that Jason Reynolds’ voice will one day bring about world peace. In the meantime, his audiobook recording of FOR EVERY ONE will definitely make you a happier person. Ever had a dream? Ever worry that your dream wasn’t realistic, or worthwhile, or profitable? Ever had someone tell you that it wasn’t? Jason Reynolds is here with a compelling audial pep talk to stoke your fire, restore your strength, and send you off (to wherever you’re going!) with an unshakeable faith in the power of simply having a dream.

5. Emergency Contact by Mary H.K. Choi

One of the many lovable things about Mary H.K. Choi’s EMERGENCY CONTACT is that it’s not a rose-colored version of being a teenager that inevitably makes you feel bad about your own un-airbrushed life. Main characters Penny and Sam feel and act so real—and narrators Joy Osmanski and Jacques Roy make them sound even more real.

6. The Complication by Suzanne Young

Suzanne Young’s Program series draws to a close with THE COMPLICATION and, if you thought the culmination of such a powerful series would be would be gut-wrenching and action-packed, you were right. The audiobook kicks the thrill factor up a notch, and you might find yourself listening to this one on 2x the speed.

7. I Have the Right To by Chessy Prout

Chessy Prout entered the public eye because of her heartbreaking sexual assault case *shakes fist at the patriarchy.* What’s even braver than writing about the ordeal in a memoir? Reading the whole thing out loud. Believe me (or hear for yourself in the excerpt!) when I say that Chessy’s audiobook recording is one of the most searing, stunning works I’ve ever heard—the utmost definition of a “must-listen.”

8. The Great American Whatever by Tim Federle

On the list of reasons why Tim Federle is a national treasure, his audiobook recording of THE GREAT AMERICAN WHATEVER just might be number one. Quinn’s life is filled with tragedy, comedy, self-doubt, and a whole lot of snark, and everything comes to life through Tim’s narration in a frankly hilarious (and also heartfelt) way.
