For us bookish people, there’s nothing better than curling up with a new book. But unless you’re lucky enough to have a full-on library in your home – and kudos to you if you do – where do you find space to read? Wouldn’t it be nice to have your own dedicated spot at home?
Thankfully, creating a cozy reading nook is also a lot easier than it seems! And, if you’re like me with a small apartment, it doesn’t have to take up a lot of space. Here are a few ideas to help get you started in creating your own little book nook.
Everything You Need to Make the Perfect Book Nook
1. The Perfect Spot
First things first, you need a space in your home to create the nook! This place will be your safe haven, so choose the happiest spot in your home. Is that in the living room? Your bedroom? Only you can decide. My recommendation, if it works for your space, is to find a spot close to a window. Not only does that offer the perfect lighting, but also the opportunity to daydream.
2. Warm Lighting
Lighting is everything – you definitely don’t wait to strain your eyes to read while in your nook. Find a cute side lamp or string of fairy lights to accent your space, while also adding warm light. Even if you (like me) set-up your space next to a window, an extra light source will be essential for nighttime reading.
3. Comfy Seating
You’ll probably be spending a lot of time in this space, so comfort is key (especially for your rump). Depending on your preferences, this could mean a fluffy rug, a cushioned seat, a dreamy bench – the options are truly limitless.
4. Cozy blanket and fluffy pillows
I’m sure you’re sensing a theme. You want this space to be cozier than cozy, which means having a big fluffy blanket and pillows readily available. Especially during the colder months, you’ll want nothing more than to curl up, snug as a bug, while reading your latest find.
And if you don’t want to buy one, perhaps this is the opportunity to start a new craft!
5. Storage space for your books
Get creative with this one! Depending on your space, a traditional bookshelf might not be feasible. Maybe you decide on a moveable book cart or a bookshelf you create yourself with stacked wooden creates from the store – whatever it is, make sure it has room for your growing collection.
And if you’re torn on how best to organize your shelf, don’t worry. The Riveted Editorial team has you covered. Take this quiz and find out how you should organize you shelf!
6. Something to eat or drink
Before settling in for a reading session in your book nook, make sure to grab your favorite drink and/or a snack. There’s nothing better than sipping a hot beverage and nibbling on a snack while getting lost in a new world. Feed the body, feed the mind. Plus, if you bring it with you before sitting, there’s less reason to get up later (you’ll thank me, promise).
7. Candles or aromatherapy oils
Set the mood by incorporating a favorite scent! Maybe it’ll be a more calming scent (like lavender or lemon) or revitalizing (like sandalwood or peppermint) – or, following our book nook theme, a cozy scent (like applies and cinnamon). Whatever you choose, it’ll elevate the space. Right now, my book nook is mixed with the scent of chamomile and bergamot for a relaxing aromatherapy experience. I highly recommend!
8. Personal touches and bookish accessories
This is your space, so get to decorating! Find a piece of art that makes you smile; fancy book ends that complement your shelves; plants or flowers for a touch of greenery. Anything that’ll add warmth and personality to the space – the little touches will make your nook feel even more special.
And now that you’ve created your perfect book nook, all that’s left is to enjoy it! Grab a book off of your growing TBR pile and settle in. You’re in for a grand adventure.
