It is so important to support Black authors by reading and buying their books now and always. As we continue to listen, learn, and lift up Black voices, we couldn’t do so without telling you about the amazing books by Black authors that are still to come in 2020 and beyond!

1. The Black Kids by Christina Hammonds Reed: On sale 8/4

Set in 1992 Los Angeles to the backdrop of the Rodney King Riots, this book follows Ashley Bennett, a wealthy Black teen as the city erupts in protests. Ashley has lived a charmed life living in a fancy neighborhood of L.A. By the end of senior year, she spends more time at the pool with her white friends than in class. But after four police officers are acquitted for beating Rodney King, a Black man, half to death, she’s no longer just one of the girls–she’s one of the Black Kids. Ashley tries to continue life as if it were normal but when a rumor she starts threatens the future of her classmate, a fellow Black kid, Lashawn, Ashley, along with the rest of LA, is left to question who is the us? And who is the them?

2. Facing the Sun by Janice Lynn Mather: On sale 8/11

Ready or not, four friends—Eve, KeeKee, Faith, and Nia—will have to face the sun as things begin to change when a hotel developer buys their community’s beloved beach. This stunning book about Aretha Franklin tells the story of her early days as in her father’s Detroit church through the journey of her string of hits that lead her to the title of “The Queen of Soul”. Aretha used her voice not only to make beautiful music, she raised it to speak out against injustice and to fight for civil rights. This is a picture book, but the illustrations are GORGEOUS and Aretha Franklin is one of a kind, so you have to have this on your shelf

4. Kamala Harris by Nikki Grimes, illustrated by Laura Freeman: On sale 8/25

Told in Nikki Grimes’s stunning verse and featuring gorgeous illustrations by Laura Freeman, discover the incredible story of Kamala Harris, a young daughter of immigrants who would grow up to defend the rights of people everywhere, that will show all young people that the American dream can belong to all of us if we fight for one another. This is a picture book but Kamala’s story is one that will inspire everyone regardless of age and the added bonus of stunning illustrations will make this a perfect addition to your shelves.

5. Legendborn by Tracy Deonn: On sale 9/15

Mia hates rom-coms. They’re forced and not at all realistic. But her friends love them and so she begrudgingly watches them. So when she has to find a date for her sister’s wedding, her friends have the perfect plan: they’re going to recreate the perfect meet-cute from all the rom-coms that they’ve watched. It’s a little crazy, a little out there, and maybe just a little bit perfect.
