Why You Should Bring Paperbacks to the Beach

After what seems like an endless winter and non-existent spring, summer is finally here! That means ice cream trucks, backyard barbecues, and my favorite way to spend the day: going to the beach! Here are some reasons why you should make sure your beach bag includes a paperback book (or more)!

Why You Should Bring Paperbacks to the Beach

1. They’re lightweight

No one wants to lug a heavy beach bag, but at the same time you need your essentials: sunscreen, water, and snacks to name a few. It might be tempting to bring that new hardcover you just bought and have been dying to dip into, but your shoulders and neck will thank you for taking a less-heavy paperback book.

2. No charge? No problem

Yes, an e-reader is even lighter than a paperback book, but technology is not fool-proof when reading. You might not have had time to charge it all the way…or worse, not charged it at all.

3. They’re (mostly) Waterproof

I’m not suggesting you dive into the ocean with your paperback, but if you’ve just come out of the ocean and can’t wait any longer before returning to your book (we’ve all been there) a little water won’t hurt the book. Don’t even think about touching your e-reader with your damp and pruney ocean hands.

4. Look, Ma! One hand

Have you ever tried to hold a hardcover book in one hand while eating with the other? It is quite difficult.

Unless you have pinkies of extreme strength, it’s almost impossible. But holding a paperback? I can hold the book in one hand and dip my chip in some guac with the other.

Here are some of the paperbacks I’ll be bringing to the beach this summer:

1. Save the Date by Morgan Matson

Charlie Grant’s older sister is getting married this weekend at their family home, and Charlie can’t wait. The house will be filled with jokes and games and laughs again. Making decisions about things like what college to attend and reuniting with longstanding crush Jesse Foster—all that can wait. She wants to focus on making the weekend perfect. The only problem? The weekend is shaping up to be an absolute disaster.

2. From Twinkle, with Love by Sandhya Menon

An aspiring teen filmmaker finds her voice and falls in love in this delightful romantic comedy from the New York Times bestselling author of When Dimple Met Rishi.

3. Stay Sweet by Siobhan Vivian

Amelia has worked at Meade Creamery for the past three summers and she’s finally head girl. But things get a bit complicated when the owner, Molly, passes away, leaving her grandnephew Grady in charge of the business. Now Amelia needs to with with him to keep the business going, but Grady has a few changes in mind…

4. Love & Luck by Jenna Evans Welch

Can you imagine being trapped in a car on a road trip with your brother and his cute friend? Well that’s exactly what happens to Addie on this heartwarming road trip through Ireland filled with love, adventure, and the true meaning behind the word family is the perfect summer read. Not to mention cute Irish accents!

5. Starry Eyes by Jenn Bennett

In this romantic dramedy from the author of Alex, Approximately, a teen girl’s way-too-ordinary life is driven off the beaten path when she’s abandoned in the wilderness with her worst adversary—the boy who broke her heart.
