Welcome to Day Five of our cover reveals! (#RivetedRevealFA17)

Today, we’re revealing the covers of two books that elegantly and honestly cover different types of mental illness. Up first we have Obsessed by Allison Britz. Allison suffers from Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) and her nonfiction debut memoir Obsessed recounts her struggle with OCD and the inspiring story of how she ultimately survived and thrived! She’s also built up a following with her Obsessed and the City tumblr where she shares funny OCD-related anecdotes and memes. Our second book, The Place Between Breaths by An Na, is a work of fiction that’s daringly dark yet hauntingly beautiful. It’s the moving story of a girl hell-bent on finding a cure for the illness (schizophrenia) that swept away her mother and might now be destroying her, too.

Obsessed by Allison Britz

About the Book:

Until one early fall night in her sophomore year of high school, Allison Britz lived a normal life with her parents in an idyllic town. A dedicated and driven student, she also had close friends and even a crush.

Then Allison suffered an incredibly vivid nightmare wherein she was diagnosed with brain cancer. The nightmare took her through every step of the treatment and eventual terminal stages. The day after, the dream lingered and she couldn’t shake the fear that her life was about to be cut short. Out of nowhere, she found herself beginning to believe that certain everyday behaviors were the key to avoiding this fate and staying healthy.

At first, it was just about making sure not to step on the sidewalk cracks. Next, counting number of steps from one location to another. Soon, she was convinced she had to sacrifice eating most of her food, and then in succession came a long list of cancer-causing mundane objects to avoid such as her hair dryer, calculator, cell phone, computer, anything green (!), bananas, oatmeal, most of her own clothing, and on and on.

Friendships fell apart as Allison lived in fear of sharing what she recognized would sound like irrational choices. Her grades dropped as she was no longer allowed to read school assignments or write with anything but one pencil that also couldn’t be sharpened. Her parents pressed to know what was happening but Allison lied expertly, hiding her downward spiral until the morning she lay on her floor, unable to put on any clothes or move from that spot. That’s when the doctors entered the picture and Allison began an impressive road to recovery.

This brave memoir brings readers through every painful step through to the other side.

The Place Between Breaths by An Na

About the Book:

Sixteen-year-old Grace is in a race against time, and in a race for her life. even if she doesn’t realize it yet. She is smart, she’s responsible, and she’s had to contend with more than what most girls have in her young life. Her mother struggled with schizophrenia for years until, one day, she simply disappeared, up and left in fear that she was going to hurt herself, or her beloved daughter. Ever since, her father has worked as a recruiter at one of the leading labs that study the disease, trying to lure the world’s top scientists there, to find a cure, hoping against hope it can happen in time to help his wife if she is ever found. But this makes him distant. Consumed. Still Grace does her part too, interning at the lab in the sequencing department dreaming that one day they might make a breakthrough…and one day they do. Grace stumbles upon a string of code that could be the key. But something inside of Grace is unravelling…could it be the same crippling disease? What is real? What is not? An Na has created a mesmerizing story — a story with twists and turns that reveal jaw-dropping insights into the mind of someone struggling with Schizophrenia.
