If you’re anything like me, you get a thrill of excitement every time you discover a new imagining of Peter Pan. Who doesn’t love getting a new look at a classic adventure?! But also if you’re anything like me, your first thought is, “I wonder if this Captain Hook will be dreamy?” The truth is, while Peter might be the cute kid, Hook is the one with the potential to be the sexy bad boy, and since I am a hopeless romantic, the sexy bad boy always has my attention! Though not every Captain Hook is a dream boat, each one brings his own unique qualities to the character.
1991 | HOOK
Dustin Hoffman’s Captain Hook may not be the most obviously charming, but he has other redeeming qualities! He’s obviously just misunderstood. I will help you see the light! This Hook’s look follows closely to the look of the character in Disney’s Peter Pan cartoon, but google what Dustin Hoffman looked like in real life in 1991! If I had to hide my naturally good looks in favor of looking like a deranged pirate while my arch nemesis got to be normal looking with a beautiful wife and happy family, I’d probably grow a bit sour too. And who doesn’t love a guy with a sense of humor? He may have kidnapped Peter’s kids, but this Captain Hook’s hilariousness should give him bonus points.
2003 | Peter Pan
Like Dustin Hoffman’s Captain Hook, Jason Isaac’s Hook follows closely to the original character’s costume. Unlike Dustin Hoffam’s Hook, this is not a bad thing. Jason makes being (and dressing like) a pirate look downright enticing! From his piercing blue eyes, to his luscious hair, to his sense of humor, this Captain Hook is a catch. He’s also pretty solidly evil, but hey, that’s half the fun! Sometimes you need a good looking bad boy in your life.
2001 | Once Upon a Time
Colin O’Donoghue is the Captain Hook of dreams! He has gone through his evil days (so he definitely has the bad boy look) and has now moved on to trying to be good. He sometimes struggles with the evil inside him, but that makes him all the more endearing when the good wins out. He has embraced the idea of falling in love, and still has a witty sense of humor. Also, JUST LOOK AT THAT FACE. All in all, he’s perfect and should fall in love with me swoon!
2014 | Peter Pan Live!
This Captain Hook is arguably the most hilarious Captain Hook to ever enter the ranks of Hookdom. From his outrageous costume to his over-the-top mannerisms and dialogue, everything about Christopher Walken as Captain Hook is top notch. He may be the least dreamy Captain on this list…but nobody’s perfect.
2015 | Pan
THIS IS WHAT I’M TALKING ABOUT. Garrett Hedlund as Hook is the dreamy Captain Hook you’re rooting for throughout the whole movie even though you know he’s going to be a bad guy because Pan is an origin story and that’s how the story goes. His beautiful blue eyes get to you every time and you find yourself hoping for the best as sparks fly with Tiger Lilly. The movie ends with Pan and Hook as friends, but you know things will change. Still, part of you believes you can be the one to bring him back to the good side wink wink.
Finally, in honor of our book UNHOOKED by Lisa Maxwell, here is my dream casting for the extremely alluring, Captain.
The Captain in UNHOOKED is tall, dark, and dangerous…but he isn’t necessarily bad. There are so many shades of grey in this book that whoever plays the Captain has to be convincing whether he’s having a good or bad moment. The Captain was also once a soldier, which means he has to look physically fit. Colton here is perfect. His rigid jawline says tough guy, but his eyes say, “I want to protect you.” He’s more than welcome to do so, if you ask me!
Tell us who YOU would cast in the comments!
