There are so many different avenues that writers can take to showcase their work, especially now that there are so many websites where you can submit your work for others to read and provide feedback. One site that we’re particularly fans of is Wattpad!
Today we have a Q&A with USA TODAY bestselling author and Wattpad Star Kelly Anne Blount, here to shine a light on Wattpad and to tell us all about the Wattpad Block Party—Winter Edition II, which officially comes to an end today (though there’s still a ton of great reading available!)
So, what exactly is Wattpad?
Wattpad is a website (with apps for tablets and mobile devices) that allows people to discover and share stories about the things they love. It turns storytelling into a social experience and gives people the ability to access and connect with an audience they might not be able to find otherwise. Whether you’re a reader or writer, Wattpad offers the opportunity to express yourself and know you’ll be heard.
Who is on Wattpad?
Wattpad is for everyone, though the majority of the users are under 30. The community is made up of 40 million people around the world.
What does one do on Wattpad?
There are a few different things you can do on Wattpad depending on what you’re interested in. The first, and perhaps most obvious thing, is that you can read and comment on others’ writing. The second is that you’re able to write and create serialized stories. Whether you’re the creator or the commenter, everyone participates on Wattpad. It’s a completely social experience.
Here are some impressive Wattpad stats:
- More than 40 million people use Wattpad a month
- A new user joins Wattpad every second of the day
- More than 200 million uploads have been shared on Wattpad
- More than 24 hours of reading material is posted to Wattpad every minute
- People spend 13 billion minutes a month on Wattpad
- Average engagement time is 30 minutes per user, per session
- 90% of all Wattpad activity is on mobile
- Wattpad stories are available in over 50 languages
How did you get involved with Wattpad?
I first heard about Wattpad from my friend and fellow USA TODAY bestselling author, Apryl Baker. She told me about this amazing place filled with people who loved reading and writing. I signed up and immediately fell in love with everything from the amazing fans to the instant feedback. Ultimately, signing up for Wattpad has given me some amazing opportunities.
Within a year and a half my dark YA thriller and horror novel, Captured, was read over 10 million times, hit the USA TODAY Bestseller List, was optioned for film, and was sold to a German publisher (you can read it too right here!). While Captured had all these awesome things happening for it, it was during this time I signed with a literary agent, was hired by Wattpad, DC Comics, and Universal Pictures to write promotional content, and ultimately became a Wattpad Star.
Talk about multiple dreams coming true, right?
Because of all the doors Wattpad was able to open for me, I wanted to give back—I wanted to do something special for the Wattpad community. And so the Wattpad Block Party was born.
Tell us more: what is this Wattpad Block Party?
The Wattpad Block Party is a huge event, which takes place twice a year (February and August) and features New York Times and USA TODAY bestselling authors, Wattpad Stars, as well as up and coming writers.
Each featured author or writer creates an exclusive post for the event that is shared on his or her feature day. In addition to exclusive content, featured authors interact with their fans through comments on their post.
Just imagine being able to talk to Christopher Pike, or Wattpad Super Stars Anna Todd and Isabelle Ronin! During the Wattpad Block Party, you can do just that!
In addition to interacting with your favorite authors, you can enter over 100 giveaways during the Wattpad Block Party.
Which YA authors are participating in this round?
I think the correct question is, which YA authors are not participating? Ha ha! There is a seriously long list of YA authors participating in the current Wattpad Block Party.
Some of the most notable YA authors featured in the Wattpad Block Parties include Christopher Pike (talk about a serious fan girl moment when he agreed to participate), Anna Todd (she has over 1 billion reads on Wattpad, is a bestselling author, and has a movie in production), Beth Reekles (her Wattpad novel, The Kissing Booth, was picked up and published by Random House and has been optioned for film and is going into production this summer), Michael Grais (he co-wrote a little screen play called Poltergeist), and Taran Matharu (who’s Wattpad novel went to auction and has been translated into 10+ languages) just to name a few!
Is there any way I can participate?
Absolutely everyone is welcome to participate! Just click here and start reading!
Aside from reading featured author’s posts, you can also leave comments and vote for the posts that you like. You can also enter the Biggest Fan Contest, which allows you to pay homage to your favorite author and/or Wattpad, and one lucky Wattpadder will win a huge prize pack! The cherry on top? The winner will be given a coveted spot in the next Wattpad Block Party! This year the Wattpad Block Party featured the very first Pitch Party. Limitless Publishing CEO, Jennifer O’Neill will select one lucky pitch for a manuscript read and potentially a publishing contract! Last, but certainly not least, the Wattpad Block Party has over 100 giveaways donated by featured authors! Prizes range from paperback copies of Strange Girl, by Christopher Pike to signed copies of The 13th Continuum, by Jennifer Brody, to Amazon and Barnes & Noble gift cards!
If someone was interested in participating as a featured author, what should they do?
On March 1, 2016 a post will go live with a sign up link for a chance to be featured in the next Wattpad Block Party (August 2016). Authors, readers, bloggers, and editors are all welcome to sign up, and everyone is given equal consideration. If you are selected for one of the feature spots in the next event, you will receive an email with further information later this spring.
One final question, just for fun…. If the apocalypse were impending, what YA character would you want to have your back?
If the apocalypse were impending, I’d definitely want Katniss Everdeen to have my back. Another awesome female YA character who is the perfect mixture of tough and sensible, she appears to be a low maintenance friend, and she’s willing to stick up for those in need. Plus, she knows how to grow food, use a bow and arrow like a champ, and she has some fantastic friends. What’s not to like about Katniss?
