What inspired you to make The Arcana Chronicles?
I have always been intrigued by the Tarot, particularly the Major Arcana, the 22 cards that I’ve used to inspire the assassins of The Arcana Chronicles. There is something really compelling to me about the idea of kids being gifted (or burdened, as the case may be!) with enormous power, and instead of being able to commiserate or revel in it together, they are forced to kill each other in order to survive. Placing a sheltered girl like Evie in those circumstances gave me a lot of drama to play with!
I was wondering, what do you do when you’re not writing? What kind of lifestyle leads to such epic books?
Not writing? Does not compute! My writing schedule for the past few years has left very little time to be not writing. I also get really attached to my characters and their stories, so it’s hard to pull me away when I’m in the middle of plotting. When my husband can pry me away from my keyboard, I love to spend time together outside, with our dogs, or on the water. Or out at events with fans and fellow authors!
What brought you to the idea to make Death’s birthplace Latvia?
My mother in law was born in neighboring Estonia, and I have spent quite a bit of time researching and falling in love with the Baltic countries. Latvia is on my travel wish list (just to explore the Gauja National Park alone . . . Sigh.)
If you’re in an apocalypse with Bagmen crawling about, without a hot guy, with a crossbow as your companion, and you might be the last person on Earth, what would you do first?
I’d like to think I’d go warrior woman on them, and fashion a weapon from the dry branches littering the ground after the Flash. But more likely? I’d run screaming in the opposite direction and find an abandoned mansion with a stocked pantry to hide out in.
If you were in a apocalyptic world where the Arcana exist, which Arcana would you like to be and why?
Ooh, this is an almost impossible question to answer! There are so many cool powers that get activated—flying, throwing lightning bolts, communicating with animals, and some new ones you’ll get to see in Dead of Winter. I know which one I wouldn’t want though: the power to kill with my touch, which is what poor Aric has been given.
