I LOVE the duology trend in YA right now, especially for sci-fi and fantasy. One book is never enough, but waiting for a series to be completed can be maddening. I just want to know what happens next, and not die of anticipation before I can find out how everything concludes! That’s why I think duologies are the sweet spot. With a series of two, you don’t have to wait too long to find out what happens to the characters, but you get just enough to really sink into them and get to know them. Sure, I appreciate stand alone novels, but for fantasy or sci-fi specifically, there’s so much to the world that I love being able to spend some extra time appreciating all the nuances.
Here are some of my favorite sci-fi and fantasy duologies!
Shimmer and Burn by Mary Taranta
In this newly released duology, Faris, in order to save her sister’s life, must smuggle magic into a plague-ridden neighboring kingdom with the help of a myserteous magician and a power-hungry princess. AND you can start reading Shimmer and Burn right now with our extended excerpt!
Last Magician by Lisa Maxwell
Time travel, heists, strong characters, and romance. What more can you want from a book? You’ll be dying for the end of this duology the second you put The Last Magician down.
The Scorpion Rules by Erin Bow
Greta is not only a Duchess and Crown Princess, but she’s also a Child of Peace, meaning she is held hostage and can be murdered at any time if her country goes to war. This premise starts an intense duology you won’t be able to put down. PLUS, this one is completed! Binge read anyone?
Six of Crows by Leigh Bardugo
No duology list of complete without Leigh Bardugo’s master piece. This intense heist novel is so much fun to read, and it’s another completed duology that’s perfect to binge read!
The Wrath & The Dawn by Renee Ahdieh
Renee Ahdieh’s novel plays with ALL of your emotions. This novel is mysterious and romantic and will hit you right in the feels.
