It’s day two of Suzanne Young Week here on Riveted!
When Suzanne isn’t writing New York Times bestselling books, she can be found inside of a high school classroom teaching English. Perhaps to no surprise, her day job and her night job often overlap. In honor of The Adjustment going on sale today (4/18), we’re excited to debut a recent project that came from such an overlap: a new trailer for The Adjustment, thanks to a collaboration of talented high school students! We’ve got the trailer below, as well as some behind-the-scenes photos and an intro from Suzanne from herself. Take a look and let us know what you think, and don’t miss out on our featured read of The Program and extended excerpt of The Adjustment!
I’m a high school English teacher. I’m also a writer, and sometimes, those worlds collide in inspiring and fantastic ways.
Our first Extra Credit Productions project started in the classroom, an assignment during a unit on advertising. As part of a “marketing campaign,” students had the freedom to explore different media, and in the end, they created a book trailer for my novel The Treatment, as well as several print ads.
That trailer ended up getting over 75,000 views on Youtube. And since then, we’ve shot five book trailers and a couple of adaptations of classics like Frankenstein. And just this weekend, we shot the book trailer for The Adjustment.
The trailers are all student-created, from the acting to directing to editing. My former students collaborate with students from different schools, and we all meet up for a day of shooting. It’s a blast! In the end, we get to be creative, inspiring each other.
After years of working together, it feels like this series—these books—are a shared part of our world. I’m grateful for the time I’ve gotten to spend with these talents students; I’m grateful for their brilliance. And I’m grateful for their support.
Hannah Johnson, actress:
“We made the first trailer for THE TREATMENT as a class project, but we ended up falling in love with the series, and making these trailers has become our passion project. Mrs. Young brings so many talented people together, and we’re able to make art. It’s nothing short of amazing!”
Christopher Hashem-Williams, director:
“Suzanne really created something special with these books. It’s a world with the subject matter and tone that makes a mesmerizing dystopian film. I’m very proud of everyone’s hard work, and I hope fans are happy with the footage.”
