I’ll admit that I’ve never kept a diary. I always wanted to, but I hated my penmanship and could never remember to write in it every day. However, my love of books like The Princess Diaries by Meg Cabot and now Confessions of a High School Disaster by Emma Chastain, have made me regret my decisions. It would be great to be able to go back and remember exactly what “High School Janine” had been thinking on any given day. How many memories have I forgotten I’ve forgotten? How many great discoveries have slipped my mind across the years? Well, now I’ll never know. But what I think is the saddest thing is…how many hilariously embarrassing moments have I successfully blocked out of my mind? As I read Confessions of a High School Disaster, I found myself wondering if I, too, had had such hilarious or touching inner monologues at that age. Was “High School Janine “as deep, or lost, or funny as Chloe Snow? Geez, I hope so.
While I have no diary entries of my own to share, some other Riveted editorial board members have been kind enough to share their favorite High School diary entries. Reading through these have taught me three things.
1) If someone told me Confessions of a High School Disaster was nonfiction, I’d believe it
2) Everyone should keep a diary
3) High Schoolers have a lot of feelings
Yesterday, Dad pranked Mom twice…both times she didn’t fall for it. First he pretended that Murphy dug up a dead body (cause he found this metal thing that looked like a finger…). Then he pretended that there was a giant worm in the bathroom (it was a long rusty metal coil thing). I was going to saran wrap Sarah’s toilet, but that would be kinda gross.
Daisy rolled in cat poo. Ewwwww! I had to give her a bath. Now my pajamas are wet. I need to get new pajama pants…and a jump rope. My other one broke because Sarah made me lasso her scooter, and the rope fell out of the handle.
I got my new pointe shoes. I couldn’t feel my toes after class, but that’s usual. Ms. R made us tape our shoes with masking tape so they’re clean for the performance. She’s going to make us paint them with makeup anyway, though. It’s annoying right now cause they kept crackling and getting stuck to things all through class.
Sarah and Mom bought a bunch of chocolate bunnies, but we’re not allowed to eat them until Easter. Ughhh.
Summer was great! Today was the first day of school. It was okay. Math was the only scary/hard class. Drama & choir are gonna be a blast! So yesterday I went to Lagoon Amusement Park & met up with some old friends from Oregon that I haven’t seen for a while cause they are here for a summer conference! So let me just say that time does wonders for not-so-cute boys!! K so one of the guys looked drastically different from what I remembered. He has contacts now & very blue eyes! He was nice and was flirting with me basically the whole time! Me & my brother & him split off and did some rollercoasters. It was a total blast. He was being really dumb and gross for some of the time but the other part he was teasing me and flirting. It was great! I really shouldn’t be so smitten cause he is probably a jerk. Oh man I’m such a loser! Well, I might see them again before they go. I’m hoping!
Andy and I slow danced last night!!!!!! It was to “Start Back at 1” but since I actually had someone to dance with, I didn’t have to watch Patrick singing it into Lindsay’s ear while they danced. But ANYWAYS Andy looked sooo cute, he was wearing that orange button down I like him in. Jade kinda pushed Andy into me so he would dance with me, but he smiled AND hugged me after, so I think he just needed the extra push—LITERALLY! We danced with everyone else after, but he was definitely watching me 😉 I did play it off like we’re “just friends,” but I know he likes me back! And now he can act on it, since Hillary broke up with him. She thinks she owns him, but it was pretty obvious that Andy is into me now, and she’s just jealous. *hair flip* Sucks to be you, Hill! Jk, love ya, even if you’re being way too possessive. We’ve both known him since kindergarten, and he can choose who he wants to be with! But Mom actually went INSIDE the dance to come and get me. SO EMBARRASSING!!!! This is why I need a cell phone…even Matt has one! But thank GAWD she missed Andy with his hands around my waist, or else I’d be so incredibly grounded. Hillary 4/29/04 The worst thing about breaking up with Andy is that we’re still lab partners, but at least he’s talking to me again. It was really hard to look at plant cells when he was angry about getting dumped. But we were friends before, so we can be friends again! And I can’t believe Jess is trying to steal Andy from me! We broke up a few months ago, but it’s not over yet! I saw them slow dancing last Friday at the dance, she thinks she’s so sneaky… Just because they dated in middle school doesn’t mean they can start getting close like before.
